Why women live longer than men?

According to figures from the charity Men’s Health Forum, 33% more men than women are dying prematurely before the age of 75 – that is 100,000 British men every year. Above that, 22% of the English and Welsh men die already before turning 65.

In comparison, only 13% of the women do not reach that age. Additionally, women outlive men by an average of 5 years. A range of factors decreases the life expectancy of men; some of them can be influenced, others are biological predetermined.

Men’s unhealthy lifestyle decreases their life expectancy

Looking in detail at death statistics, it becomes clear that suicide and cancer death rates of men are exceeding the ones of women decisively: 76% of the suicides in the UK are men, which are also 70 % more likely to die from any form of cancer.

An unhealthy lifestyle and an unbalanced psyche are, apparently, major factors creating an under-75 mortality risk of 14.9% for men and 9.1% for women. Men are more likely to smoke, eat unhealthier and exercise less – factors which determine one’s health crucially. Worryingly, 86% of the patients dying of lung cancer caused their disease by tobacco smoking.

In addition, researchers found that smoking causes many other forms of cancer, for instance, liver, bladder, kidney and stomach. Both women and men can decrease their risks to develop cancer crucially by quitting smoking and going cold turkey. Alternatively, smoking E-cigarettes, such as Freshcig, may decrease the health risks of smoking, as they do not impose hazardous tar and carbon monoxide on the lungs.

Men are due to their biology pre-programmed to live shorter

However, an unhealthy lifestyle is not the only reason for the shorter life expectancy of men, but also biological factors impact on the lifetime of men and women.

Men are usually taller, bigger and stronger than women and use a lot of their energy and resources to maintain that strength from early years on. In contrast, women are born with a bigger portion of stamina which helps them to care for their children and even grandchildren later on.

Finally, men tend to care less for their health: they miss their health checks more often and avoid going to the doctor in the case of health problems. They are simply willing to take higher levels of risks, which is probably triggered by the male hormone testosterone. This hormone is also believed to influence the body’s lipid profile negatively increasing ‘bad’ cholesterol levels. In contrast, the female hormone oestrogen protects the female body form cardio-vascular diseases, dilating blood vessels and lowering the level of ‘bad’ cholesterol.
